Continuing Professional Development for psychologists is an essential part of ethical, effective practice. It keeps our knowledge current, supports professional growth, and ultimately benefits the people we work with every day. But if we are honest, CPD for psychologists can also feel like just another demand in an already full schedule.
After many years working in the field, we have both experienced, and witnessed, the realities of professional life in mental health. The emotional labour, the administrative load, the pressure to stay up to date, and the growing awareness of burnout in psychologists and other health professionals. While Continuing Professional Development is vital, the way it is often delivered does not always support the wellbeing of the practitioners it is designed to help.
That was the starting point for CPD on the Sea.
A Different Way to Experience CPD for Psychologists
We began asking a simple question: what if professional development for psychologists did not feel like another obligation?
What if it could be something people genuinely looked forward to?
From that idea, CPD on the Sea was created - a model that combines high-quality, evidence-based learning with the restorative experience of travel. By delivering psychology CPD in Australia on board cruise ships, we have designed an environment where professionals can engage deeply with learning while also having space to rest, reflect, and reset.
Rather than spending days on end in a conference setting, participants can complete structured workshops on sea days while also enjoying fresh surroundings and time away from the usual demands of daily life. With the option to bring partners, friends, or family, the experience becomes both restorative and practical, with eligible CPD travel often attracting tax concessions.
Why This Matters
Burnout is not a new concept in our profession, but it is becoming increasingly recognised and openly discussed. We believe CPD for psychologists in Australia should be part of the solution, not another contributor to the problem. Creating space for reflection, slowing down the pace, and allowing learning to occur in a more relaxed and engaging setting can make a meaningful difference. When people feel more resourced, they are better able to think clearly, integrate new knowledge, and return to their work with renewed energy.
Bringing Life Along With You
One of the aspects we are most passionate about is that these experiences are not limited to the individual practitioner. Why not bring partners, families, or friends along, or choose to room-share with a colleague, making the experience both flexible and accessible. While CPD sessions are running, loved ones can enjoy the cruise experience, and outside of those times, participants can fully share the experience with them. This creates something quite different from traditional psychologist CPD: a way to meet professional requirements without having to step away from your life to do so.
A Practical Benefit Too
There is also a practical advantage. In many cases, CPD-related travel may be tax deductible, depending on individual circumstances (we always recommend checking with an accountant). This can make professional development for psychologists more accessible and further supports the idea that learning can be integrated into life, rather than competing with it.
Our Vision for CPD on the Sea
At its core, CPD on the Sea is about changing the experience of Continuing Professional Development.
Our aim is to offer psychology CPD that is:
high quality and clinically relevant
engaging and reflective
supportive of wellbeing
something people actually look forward to
We want participants to leave not only with new knowledge and CPD hours, but with a sense of clarity, renewed energy, and a reminder of why they entered this profession in the first place.
Looking Ahead
This is just the beginning.
We’re excited to grow CPD on the Sea into a space where psychologists, and other allied health professionals, can access meaningful, well-designed learning experiences that genuinely support both their professional and personal lives.
Because CPD shouldn’t just be something you complete.
It should be something that gives something back.
